Get a new turbo fitted to your car for added horsepower

Find out about an excellent bit of kit that you can have put on your car that will add horsepower through compressing the exhaust air that goes into the motor. This is a cost effective way of adding horsepower, and they have many advantages over other methods too.

It is very common for people to want added horsepower to their car, however, many of the methods which give motorists this are very expensive and also have other disadvantages such as a significant amount of added weight to the car. There is one method which is great value for your money and also adds no weight to your car at all. This is through the use of a turbocharger, or turbo, as they are more commonly known.

A turbo is a turbine driven centrifugal compressor, and it is all powered by the gases from the engine’s exhaust. A turbo is all about airflow, and the exhaust air exits the engine through the exhaust pipe, however, some of it will also go through the turbo. The compressor wheel spins so fast that it causes the air that goes into the motor to compress and have added pressure, and this adds power to the car. It is a very clever bit of kit which has a huge impact, and is a terrific way to add horsepower to your car without spending too much. It is also better for the environment than other methods.

You can get a new turbo fitted to your car fairly easily, and there are companies who can do this for you. Before long your turbo will be fitted and you will be out on the road with what will feel like a new, more powerful car.

Turbo repair: help your car go faster for longer

Unless you take amazing care of your car (i.e. don't drive it), you can almost guarantee that something will go wrong with it on a yearly basis, especially if it's a second or third-hand model that has been around the block a few times – it's one of those parts of life that you just have to accept.

However, the more parts and extras you add to it, the more things are likely to break and deteriorate on it. Many people like to add a turbocharger to their car wherever possible as it can provide the car (especially if it's got a relatively weak engine that you can't get a lot out of) with a boost of horsepower at a negligible extra weight. The charger compresses the air needed to power the engine so more can be forced in, resulting in the extra power. In some ways, adding a turbo could even be considered a green measure – you don't use any extra fuel but you get the added power of a car with a bigger engine. In many cases, this is an addition worth making to your vehicle, but you need to be prepared for things going wrong and how to handle them.

Unless you're a qualified mechanic, if you suspect that something's wrong with your turbocharger then you'll need to take it to a garage that specialises in turbo repair, because it's a specialist piece of kit – most garages could probably muddle through but it's better to be sure that the staff at the place you take it to know what they're doing. Whether it's a gas leak or a clogged air filter, it's better to be safe than sorry!
